Somerset, Ky. Rejects Proposal for Cigar Bars

The Somerset City Council was set to vote today on a proposal that would have modified the southern Kentucky city’s smoking ordinance to allow for cigar bars, but now it will not happen; neither the vote nor the allowing of cigar bars.

According to Commonwealth Journal, the proposal—the second reading was scheduled to be voted on today—was met with opposition from both residents and health groups and as such, the vote has been pulled from the Monday meeting agenda and it appears the proposal has died. Somerset was voting on the proposal because a local businessman wanted to open up a cigar bar that would have allowed for smoking while also serving alcohol, something that is not allowed under the current Somerset smoking ordinance.

Somerset is located in Pulaski County, in the southern part of the state and about 50 miles north of Knoxville. It has a population of around 11,000 people
